often reiterated comments about the character of Oblomov is that despite his being a personification of indolence and sloth, he is at heart an appealing character, affectionately presented. We can
understand why the lively and energetic Olga finds him attractive, and why she goes to such lengths to try and change him: however, we might also ask whether she is
right to do so and whether or not the changes which does manage to effect in him are positive or permanent ones.
Clearly, there is a substantial difference between the almost immobile Oblomov whom we encounter at the
beginning of the novel, and the rather more resourceful and determined character into which he develops later in the narrative. As numerous commentators have pointed out, for the first 150
pages of the novel, he does not even get out of bed, whereas later he starts to visualise a possible future for himself and Olga, rather than existing solely in
an indolent present. Evidently, the characters of Olga and Schtoltz were introduced to demonstrate that there is an alternative to a life of immobility and sloth, and to provide a
contrast between Oblomovs virtual nihilism and the energy and optimism which the other characters demonstrate.
If we see Oblomov as representing the traditional "old guard" of the Russian aristocracy, however, it is interesting that Goncharov seems in some ways to see the
old guard ultimately triumphing over the more energetic influences of the new regime: Oblomov does, after all, relapse into his old ways in the end, although one might then speculate
