Even particular artists, such as Michelangelo, can change they way they interpret and construct the same subject matter after years of life and study, as seen in Michelangelos various Pietas. Such is the case in the sculpture of figures, even sculptures that span continents and religious beliefs. The following paper examines two different sculptures. One is Donatellos "Mary Magdalene" and the other is Spirit Spouse from Africa from the 20th century. Objects of Art The figures being discussed are Donatellos Mary Magdalene on page 625 of the text and Spirit Spouse from the Ivory Coast, Africa on page 885 (Stokstad, 2004). They are both wooden carved figures. Donatellos comes from the 15th century Europe and Spirit Spouse comes from the 20th century Africa. The style of Donatellos work is very detailed, yet also very primitive in many ways. It is primitive in its representation of the figure of Mary Magdalene. As one author notes it is carved in a way that presents a "beastly shape" of a very primitive type (Levi, 2003). It is an elongated sort of style, that is intricate in its style of draping that occurs with the clothing and hair of the figure. It is very realistic, and not symbolically representative in its style. The Spirit Spouse is very geometric in style and very symbolic it would seem. The figure is carved as though it is designed around various blocks of wood, rather than the one block of wood it seems carved from. There are geometrical designs in the figure as well, which further add to the geometric style of the piece. It is also very primitive.
