wristwatches, dog tags, mosquito repellent, chewing gum, candy, cigarettes, salt tables, packets of Kool-Aid, lighters, matches, sewing kits, Military Payment Certificates, C rations, and two or three canteens of water" (OBrien 2). This is how author Tim OBrien introduces readers to the soldiers of the Alpha Company, a Vietnam War fighting unit, in his postmodern novel, The Things They Carried, which was based on OBriens own military experiences. These men are on a journey into the combat zone as well as a journey of self-discovery. Some will never complete the journey, but all of these characters are deeply affected by it nevertheless and the objects they take with them, encounter, or leave behind tells more about these individuals than words could ever reveal. Each man carried objects that were essential to their profession - most of which involved either weapons for killing or medical supplies for quick fixes if not for healing. For example, the platoons First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried on his journey "a compass, maps, code books, binoculars, and a .45-caliber pistol" (5) so that his men could find their way through the jungle villages of Southeast Asia and protect themselves if they had to. He also carried a strobe light to illuminate their oftentimes-dark path, and he also carried "the responsibility for his men" (5). But for himself, Jimmy carried "letters from a girl named Martha, a junior at Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey. They were not love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping, so he kept them folded in plastic at the bottom of his rucksack" (1).
