a trading block with common interests to cement the peace which had been formed in Europe after the Second World War. Following to world wars much of Europe had
suffered, it was hoped that economic ties may be able to achieve what political negotiation had not. The purpose of this was to draw countries closer and prevent another war;
financial integration should be an effect way of controlling this as the financial cost of war would be too great due to the integration.
The Treaty of Rome set down the general objectives of the European Economic Community. These were that throughout the whole community there would be a harmonious development
of economic activities, to encourage and promote continued and suitable balanced expansion and to increase stability within Europe economically and politically. The
concept of the free market had the basic idea of the free movement of goods and services that could be achieved by breaking down barriers to trade though the harmonization
of market regulations. This would be to remove the physical barriers to trade as well as the legal barriers. The harmonization of the legal requires was one of the main
ways that this was to be achieved, The basic principle that was to be applied was that of equal impact, with harmonization taking place through the principle of subsidiarity .
