UAE has brought with it many of the problems associated with developed nations, including a tendency toward obesity that is so marked it has become a cause of national concern. This paper discusses the problem of obesity in the UAE. Discussion The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was established in 1971 and is a "federation of seven emirates" situated in the "eastern Arabian Peninsula, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia" (Malik and Bakir, 2007, p. 15). There are a few oases and a long coastline, but most of the country is comprised of a "flat coastal plain" that merges with "rolling sand dunes and the vast desert hinterland of Arabia" (Malik and Bakir, 2007, p. 15). A 1995 census put the population of the nation at approximately 2.7 million, of whom the vast majority (80%) are foreign born (Malik and Bakir, 2007). According to a short article from the Middle East Medical and Pharma Review, obesity is increasing "across all ethnic groups in UAE, and the increase is particularly severe among local Emirates" (Join the movement to tackle obesity, 2004).
