Although the problem of obesity has plagued mankind since ancient times, it was never as prevalent as it is today. That prevalence can be
related to two factors: less energy expenditure currently needed to obtain food, and a change in the way we regard food. While the former can be related to
changes in technology and societal structure, the latter can be credited at least in part to aggressive marketing campaigns by the fast food industry. At blame too, however, are
problems such as preexisting genetic tendencies, psychological, sociological, and economic factors. Interestingly, our understanding of how to combat obesity has changed little since ancient times. Then as is
the case today obesity was associated with overeating and too little physical activity. It has only been recently, however, that our society has begun to drill those points home
to the most vulnerable members of our society, our children. Obesity is a problem which confronts an estimated thirty-four percent of Americans (Ridings,
Rapp, Boosalis, and Pomeroy, 1998). Indeed, it is considered one of the most common problems demanding the attention of the primary care physician (Ridings, Rapp, Boosalis, and Pomeroy, 1998).
Millions of Americans, in fact, can be classified as obese. Obesity, or even less extreme cases of excess weight can lead to a number of physiological and mental
consequences, not the least of which are conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, anxiety, depression, and even heart disease (Aldorato et. al., 1997). Along with the weight problem itself comes a
