obesity is, its health implications; treatment and in particular, the role of nutrition in the treatment of the condition. Discussion Obesity is not simply being overweight, it can have serious,
even life-threatening, consequences. Obesity is "an excess proportion of total body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight" ("Obesity").
Obesity is most commonly measured using the body mass index, referred to as the BMI ("Obesity"). A person "is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and
29.9; a person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30" ("Obesity"). If a person is diagnosed as "morbidly obese" it means they are 50-100% over their
normal weight, "more than 100 pounds over normal weight, has a BMI of 40 or higher, or is sufficiently overweight to severely interfere with health or normal function" ("Obesity"). The
use of the term "morbid" in reference to excess weight indicates just how serious the condition can be. There are many causes for obesity; the most obvious is simply that
people eat too much and exercise too little ("Obesity"). But there are other factors as well, including age, gender (women tend to be heavier than men), genetics, environment (lifestyle), illness,
medication and the level of ones physical activity ("Obesity"). Psychological factors may come into play, such as eating when one is bored or stressed rather than hungry ("Obesity"). Obesity can
cause numerous physical problems, not to mention the lack of self-esteem that people suffer, particularly in the U.S., where the motion picture and fashion industries have set impossible standards for
