a whole. In recent years, through combination of efforts by both the state and county health departments and in coordination with state and local governments, the health of Oklahomans is
improving (OSDoH, 2007). This improvement is beginning to offset the declines in health that occurred in the state in the 1990s; but, more can be done, particularly in regards to
obesity and minority health (OSDoH, 2007). The United States population is rapidly becoming the most obese in the world, as out of a total population of 292 million, 129 million
Americans are either overweight or obese, as determined by body mass index (BMI) (OSDoH, 2007). The population of Oklahoma, unfortunately, is no
exception to this trend. Furthermore, statistics reflecting the health of the population of Tillman County are particularly discouraging. For example, in statistics reflecting the years 2002-2004, it was found that
2,810 residents of Tillman County, that is, 31.8 percent of the total population, were classified as obese (OSDoH, 2007). Statistics further show that this portion of the population accounted for
$1,109,950 in additional medical costs for the county (OSDoH, 2007). Additionally the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDoH) feels that these statistics are on the low side because they
do not take into account the percentage of obese or overweight individuals who are over age 65 (OSDoH, 2007). As this indicates, obesity is a severe problem in the nation
