on the Republican ticket, which is a party first. This is a historical selection with meaning beyond the obvious notion that the party is invigorated as a result of a
surprise pick. An unknown woman who happens to be a governor and a stanch conservative is introduced. Sarah Palin represents many women, but surprisingly, the National Organization for Women does
not think so. After the announcement, NOW issued a statement, part of which included the following sentiment: " Gov. Palin may be the second woman vice-presidential candidate on a major
party ticket, but she is not the right woman. Sadly, she is a woman who opposes womens rights, just like John McCain" (Gandy, 2008). There had been a great deal
of attacks against Palin. Yes, she represents women to an extent and is symbolic of the change that many believe is represented by the fact that a woman is involved.
But while Palin is symbolic of this type of change, there is argument over other issues that resonate with the people, creating a portrait of the candidate that goes beyond
gender. In fact, Palin is symbolic of the religious right agenda, something that Obama characterizes as clinging to guns and religion. Palin does in fact clings to such things proudly.
After the announcement, Barack Obama attacked Palin. From a symbolic interactionist perspective, why did he do this? What compelled Obama to criticize the opponents choice? Of course, at face value,
it is known that the election is a contest and that there are certainly reasons why McCain would want the Republican ticket to look bad, but there seems to be
