make between childhood and adulthood can sometimes occur seamlessly with little emotional strife and uproar other than that that may be created by others in her family. Other times,
however, this is a time of tremendous discord, a time when a girl feels that no one understands and truly appreciates her. No characters from literature better illustrate the
differences people experience when they transition this time than do Maggie from Alice Walkers "Everyday Use" and Connie from Joyce Carol Oates "Where are You Going, Where Have You Been."
Although the older sister Dee is the focal point of Walkers story, it is Maggie that is the most emotionally secure character.
Although her life is complicated by a variety of factors such asher own physical disformities, Maggie trods quite competently through. This is not to say she doesnt have
insecurities, of course. Indeed, Maggie views Dee the older sister as living a glamorous life. She has, after all, gone to college and she, unlike Maggie, suffers no
physical scars from past misdeeds. In thinking about Dee, however, Maggie concludes that"no is a word the world never learned to say to her" (Walker,56).
Maggie views herself as mentally inferior to Dee or as Walker puts it "she knows she is not bright" (Walker 408). She walks
with a sideways shuffle along her sister whose feet shy at touching the very earth from which she was spawned. At the same time, however, Maggie is more rooted
in the realities of her world, in the "everyday use" certain objects from that world are destined for. While Dee now prizes the hand pieced quilts that are found
