in America would do. Needless to say, such reports get American workers all up in arms, convinced jobs (and good-paying jobs at that) are being exported overseas. American workers basically
see this as a plot among the U.S. companies to cut workers while saving big on profits. Is that really the case, or
is there a valid argument from an economic point of view that outsourcing such jobs can actually help U.S. businesses, the U.S. economy and U.S. workers? Interestingly enough, although theres
been a great deal of hue and cry over the exportation of white collar jobs, a good chunk of the business literature on the topic actually tends to support such
moves, noting that in this era of globalization, outsourcing these jobs to other areas actually holds some good advantages. One such article
points out that globalization of both software and computer services will ultimately enhance the growth of U.S. productivity (Postrel, 2004). According to economist Catherine Mann, whos with the Institute of
International Economics in Washington, D.C., is that this outsourcing will ultimately lead to new, higher-value, higher-paid technical jobs in the U.S. (Postrel, 2004). This happened, she pointed out, in the
hardware industry during the late 1980s, when Asian manufacturers began undercutting U.S. chipmaker prices in memory chips (Postrel, 2004). What ended up happening is that U.S. semiconductor makers moved to
higher-value microprocessors, computer companies went overseas to purchase memory chips and other components, and both businesses and consumers began getting the benefit of lower prices for computers and other electronic
