preparation for the award involves staring into the future, and figuring out where a company will be in the near, mid-term and long-term.
As such, preparation for the award (and beyond) would have to include serious forecasting techniques. These could include (but arent limited to) time series, cyclical variations and inventory prediction.
The time series, which goes into seasonal trends when it comes to manufacturing, tells the company when times might be a little busier than other times. For example, a clothing
manufacturer that makes winter jackets will know that early summer will be a busy time (orders can come up to six months in advance). This means that the remaining down
time can focus on better ways to get the product to market and to get the manufacturing process up and moving.
Another important quality consideration is inventory. It doesnt pay for our jacket manufacturer to have too many thread and not enough down or goose feather material. With various inventory forecasting
techniques, the company can be better prepared during a heavy manufacturing period to ensure that the materials necessary are on hand, while also ensuring that there isnt excess inventory during
the slower periods. Cyclical variations are also built into forecasts. Even within time forecasting, there are cycles.
But how does a Baldridge organization prepare its budget? Certainly from a financial point of view, the company will want whats currently on the books. But
