assumption of the innate goodness of mankind. Iago, however, believes in none of that. Power, greed, lust, are all a part of Iagos worldview and so, in the end, brings them all to a tragic end. One of the overriding questions that begins to emerge, early on, is, why does Iago hate Othello so much? The answer seems to ly in the realm of professional and personal jealousy. Othello has been promoted over him and he is irate. Likewise, adding insult to injury in Iagos eyes, is the fact that Othello is not even of their nationality. So, not only was Othello promoted over Iago, but he is an outsider. Lastly, Othello has the beautiful Desdemona while Iago is said to have married a less than attractive mate. Karl Zender offers: "... the immediate cause for Iagos murderous rancor lies within the play itself, in an episode where Desdemona, all inadvertently, places Iago in a situation in which he humiliates himself. It argues further that themes evoked in this scene, of speech and silence, verbal competence and incompetence, resonate throughout the play (as they do throughout Shakespeares career), in ways that should significantly influence our understanding both of Iagos behavior in Acts III and IV and of the fifth-act climax"(Zender). In short, then, Othello has it all, and in Iagos eyes, he has nothing. It is apparent that Iago has worked for many years in the service of the court and that he had fully expected to be promoted into the position which Othello is given. His carefully laid plans, and we have no cause to think that he has not been manipulating and playing his games with others before Othellos arrival, have been interrupted and usurped by the outsider.
