organized crime - and in many ways still is today. However, as this paper will show, organized crime is starting to crop up in other unique areas as well. By
examining where organized crime is now, well try to predict where it might come up in the future. Although labor seems to
be a particularly interesting subject in this area, a general search of organized crime yielded some surprising results, as well see in this paper. The Face of the "New Mobs"
The concept of organized crime seems to be Italian in nature. Basically, mention a current day mobster and the one who comes
to mind is Tony Soprano. The truth, however, is that the face of organized crime is changing - as are the faces.
There are new ethnic mobs springing up throughout the United States, and many predict that these mobs could become the backbone of organized crime during the 21st century (Couns, 1999).
Such groups are connected by strong ethnic ties (Chinese); large numbers (black gangs) and sophistication (Russian mobs) (Couns, 1999). Even worse, all are involved in drug-related violence (Couns, 1999). Yet
all of these gangs have more formal education and larger resources than did the mobs of yore; and the criminals are using the Internet (see below) and crytography to gain
their wealth (Couns, 1999). Whats also interesting is that organized crime is starting to form alliances between various street gangs - and
