Once upon a time, all an employee needed were a college degree, intelligence and company loyalty to land a job and stay there for
the rest of his working career. However, during the latter part of the 20th century, and well into the 21st, things changed for the standard worker. He might have found
his job outsourced to another company or even "offshored" to another country. He might have found himself terminated because of rising business costs and a streamlined way of doing things.
Or he might have found more competition when it came to applying for a job - not just from his own country but from overseas as well. Added to this
mix are corporations demand for workers who can be internationally competitive (Olabuenaga, 2010). The major trends in the market these days consist of technological development and global markets (Olabuenaga, 2010).
So what does the successful 21st century worker need to have? For one thing, this worker needs to understand that his or her
job isnt necessarily going to be permanent (though most workers these days seem to understand this already). Worker loyalty doesnt really exist any more - the best thing an employee
can do, therefore, is to do his/her best, learn as much as s/he can from the organization, then move on (either voluntarily or involuntarily).
The 21st century worker will certainly need to be computer-savvy, and not be afraid to hop onto the Internet either to check e-mail or look for information. This worker
will also need to be tech-savvy - virtual teams, meetings and collaborations are going to be more the norm than the exception. Finally, in terms of education, the 21st century
