How would a leader use his/her leadership style during an organizational change program? Though there are many different types of leadership theories ranging from the classic/autocrat ("my way or
the highway") to participative ("Id like your suggestions") the one type of leadership theory most associated with successful organizational change is the transformational leadership theory.
The assumptions behind the transformational leadership theory is that individuals will follow a leader who inspires them, and that leaders who have vision and passion can achieve great
things and goals (Transformational Leadership, 2011). But transformational leaders are more than people with a ton of vision, passion and enthusiasm. Theyre also individuals who help others realize their potential.
These leaders sincerely care about their followers and want their followers to succeed. The enthusiasm and visionary approach of the transformational leader, not to mention the motivational ability of these
individuals, helps an organization weather the ups and downs of change. The theory has some basis in reality - Michaelis et al (2010)
in examining how transformational leadership relates to change implementation among followers noticed that such leadership had a direct connection to implementation behavior. Furthermore, a commitment to change helped cement the
relationship between transformational leaders and their followers and implementation behavior (Michaelis et al, 2010). In short, transformational leaders rely on vision, enthusiasm
