information is being disseminated and how that information is being perceived by the general public. An internal communications assessment can include everything from
an inventory of communications materials, to focus groups and interviews with employees. An external assessment, in the meantime, can include everything the internal assessment has, plus a review of the
external literature. Assessments also need to take into account assessments of how information is communicated about and to people (such as employees
and the general public); products and services (how products and services are perceived by those who are buying them or making use of them) and the relationship of the organization,
and its products and services, to the overall community. Special attention also needs to be paid to not only the formal communications
processes but the informal ones as well. Informal communication (such as rumor, innuendo or perception) is important because many times, rumor ends up having a larger impact on an organizations
plan then does a formal communications program. Finally, a communications assessment isnt just a one-time scenario. Rather, its something that should be
