work, going into bankruptcy protection (Williams, 2011). When it emerged from bankruptcy protection, it got rid of various brands, closed several hundred dealerships and negotiated concessions with labor unions (Williams,
2011). In 2010, the company issued an initial public offering, returning to the stock market (Williams, 2011). GMs goal is to raise the
quality of its cars and trucks, which has been a source of criticism for the company for many decades (Williams, 2011). Along those lines, the company is now focused on
its Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands, while discontinuing the HUMMER, Pontiac and Saturn brands (Williams, 2011). But all is not necessarily rosy
with this company - the stock offering, for one thing, "acknowledges a dearth of auto industry experience" which could, in turn, impact its performance (Williams, 2011). Adding to the issue
is that there have been four CEOs since 2009 - Daniel Akerson is the latest (he was appointed director by the U.S. government after GM emerged from bankruptcy, and his
background is in finance and telecommunications, rather than the auto industry). I have been asked to take the role of a consultant who
has been brought in to analyze GMs issues and to provide recommendations about how decision-making capabilities can be made more effective. In determining solutions to this issue, Ill draw on
