Southwest Airlines is a domestic air carrier that has been successful in offering point-to-point service in the United States (versus the typical hub-and-spoke design typically used at American airports).
Though SWA, as an air carrier, provides a tangible product (Boeing 737 airplanes), the company actually offers a service. That service involves getting passengers from point A to point B
in a timely and safe fashion. Southwest Airlines has managed to succeed, for the most part, because of simplicity (Daniels, 2011). The majority
of its flights are less than two hours, and it lands at smaller, regtional airports to avoid congestion that is common with the larger, international airports (Daniels, 2011). Furthermore, Southwest
only flies one aircraft, which means it can minimize training and maintenance costs (Daniels, 2011). This particular advantage may be eroded, however, as SWA is planning flights to Hawaii, meaning
it will soon be investing in larger aircraft. Furthermore, SWAs recent acquisition of AirTran brings a different type of aircraft - the Boeing 717 - into the mix (Alukos, 2011).
The company furthermore is "no-frills" (meaning no meals or snacks on board) and a no-assigned seats policy, which helps the carrier better
adhere to its schedule through faster turnarounds at airports (Daniels, 2011). Southwest Airlines mission "is dedication to the highest quality of customer service
delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride and company spirit" (About Southwest, 2011). The mission expands to the companys employees, pointing out that creativity and innovation, as well
