was being waged and won on the homefront as well. Women, thrust into positions and roles that their mothers and society had not prepared them for, found them scrambling to
adapt to roles that had traditionally been held by males. Many women worked in factories, maintained the household and raised the children, while supporting their husbands who were fighting on
foreign soil. In the end, what this served to do was bring out the inherent strength that resides in every woman if it is just given the chance. A
striking example of this is Rosa Mae Wilson, whose husband, Freddy, was shipped off only a week after theyd been married. Rosa went to work in a factory making boots
for the military personnel. The factory, she states was run by a terribly odious man who took great joy in lording over all the women. He felt that he had
to keep them in their places and he often belittled their work, often cutting their pay for mistakes, even if the mistakes were due to faulty equipment at the factory.
Q: So, here you were, a newly wed, living by yourself and working in a factory where the boss takes every chance he can get to give you a
hard time. What was going through your mind at this time, Rosa? A: Well, I know that most of us girls used to make up little ditties about Mr. Cusak
behind his back. I wish I could remember how they went, but I do remember that the rhyme fit the rhythm of the sewing machines as we made the boots.
