Oracles main claim to fame is the it produces database management software by companies to store and access data from numerous platforms (Foster, 2004). Oracle also offers business applications for data warehousing, customer relationship management and supply chain management as well (Foster, 2004). Oracle has had upgrades in its business software, including the most recent Oracle 11I E-Business suite (Foster, 2004). In the meantime, the Oracle Database 10g software was introduced during 2003 (Foster, 2004). This database software is useable on any size of networks (as well as being integrated with various processes such as business intelligence, content management, data warehousing and online transaction processing) (Foster, 2004). Oracle, as of this writing, is also involved in a hostile takeover bid for rival PeopleSoft - a move that has gained the involvement of the Justice Department, which is filing an anti-trust suit against the company (Foster, 2004). Microsoft itself is no stranger to anti-trust suits (having been through a few itself). But the software giant is also interested in offering databases in addition to its desktop management system. Back in early 2003, Microsoft entered the database software market by offering a new 64-bit database, claiming that the new system had performances rivaling those of the Unix-based systems, while offering greater ease of use and a lower cost (Songini, 2003). When it announced its new Windows Server 2003, Microsoft also announced that it would ship the 64-bit SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition in order to compete against Oracle (Songini, 2003).
