of the "common man" that has led to her success. Interestingly enough, we can use some of Oprahs communications qualities to help boost the quality of corporate communications as well.
Well take a look at how this can happen. What we need to say at the outset here is that unlike others
who are in her particular industry, Oprah doesnt talk down. Rather, she relates to. This is a critical difference. When you "talk down" to someone, you condescend, meaning resentment can
be a real problem (whether or not youre planning it). But when you relate to, you know what the other person is going through. This is, in fact, part of
what helped President Bill Clinton win the 1992 U.S. presidential election, the fact that he could say "I feel your pain" and mean it.
This is another quality of Oprahs ability to communicate as well. She means what she says. Shes very sincere in her interests and in what she does. If
she werent sincere, she simply wouldnt do it. This is an advantage of having the control she does - she can choose what she wants to do, and as a
result, her communication is sincere. Her particular philosophy when it comes to her shows involve relevance (is the topic relevant to what
