hell on Earth, is it ever justifiable? According to many of the worlds greatest philosophers, the answer is yes, there is such a thing as a just war. One
of those philosophers was St. Thomas Aquinas, whose Summa Theologica presents a very specific outline of what has become known as the Just War Theory. Aquinas discusses not only the
justification of war, but also the kinds of activities or operations that are permissible, in his opinion, in war. Given that there are certain criteria that need to be met,
one has to wonder if Enduring Freedom, the fight against terrorism, meets those criteria. Firstly, it should be said that a country should have just cause. Meaning that a just
war is not started or initiated by a need to acquire more land or to fight over possession of perceived value, but rather is a decision that is based on
some principle such as self defense or an initial defensive action to prevent an attack. War may also be said to be just when it is in protection of those
who are not able to protect themselves or have become weakened in their own just cause war. An example of this would be the involvement of the United States
in World War II. Not only did Japan attack American soil, and its people, but the United States could no longer ignore the debauchery that was going on in Europe
under Hitler and Mussolini. Not only was the United States justified in its retaliation, but many fear that the United States waited too late to become involved in World War
