In this scenario, the writer and two partners are interested in starting a company specializing in selling used books. The location is a storefront in the local shopping mall/area, as well as a presence on the Internet. Each partner as $10,000 to invest in the business, meaning a total of $30,000 for start-up fees. But more will be needed. Given we dont know much about the area the student is interested in, well make a couple of assumptions for purposes of this paper. First, well assume the storefront will be in a highly-trafficked area that caters to fairly well-educated, middle-to-upper-class families. The "well educated" is important, as lower-income people, for the most part, may not have as much of an interest in reading. The store will be a combination of a coffee shop and used-book store, where people can come to relax and look at books, and where authors will come and chat as well. Also on the docket will be special presentations. For example, in honor of Martin Luther King Juniors birthday, books will be featured about the man, and presentations about him will also be presented by the store. The competition for this book store would be the larger chains, such as Barnes & Noble or Borders. These stores would have more of a selection of books, and newer ones at that. They also have the capacity to obtain out-of-stock books. This is why its important for this particular book store to focus on the environment and experience the shopper will enjoy when he/she comes into the shop, rather than the fact that he/she can get a book for fairly inexpensive. ...
