With the admittance of Randall Patrick McMurphy from the prison work farm, the entire psyche ward begins a slow and systematic move for change in just about every aspect of
life on the ward. Set against this backdrop of abnormality come the themes of freedom from repressive authority and a more liberated view of sexuality. The movie had impact far
beyond its wildest dreams, including instituting changes for the better in the Criminal Justice System. The ward, itself, becomes a living metaphor for the suppressive and oppressive sentiments that existed
during the 1960s in America. However, if the movie only presented this anti-establishment theme, then it would never have had the complexity and depth which have earned it numerous
awards, one should think. Instead, the film also raises some interesting questions about insanity, what it is and explores the question of where sanity ends and madness begins. In an
almost philosophical way he compels the reader to examine the amount of control that is mindlessly given over to the government and other institutions. He may be saying that this
is the greatest insanity of them all, to give up ones freedom to think and dream. This insight brought about many reforms. One of those reforms was the change
in public opinion toward those who are mentally ill and toward those who have been incarcerated. The question that it brought up was that many of the people who had
been incarcerated were actually suffering from various forms of mental illness. Others began to see inmates as victims of society and an unjust system that sought to dehumanize them instead
of rehabilitate them. The characters each portray various themes throughout the movie. The characters themselves are larger than life and so it can be thought that they were created
