temptation and/or evil. Perhaps one of the worst, among many, religions to propagate the idea of the inferiority of women is the Hindu faith. The student will want to point
out that Hinduism is primarily situated in India. There, Hindu women are required to obey men upon peril of their lives. The student in constructing their paper will no doubt
find that statistic appalling, but will note that conditions for women as Hindu, no matter where they live are not good. Women
are required to marry whoever is chosen for her. She has little say in the matter. In many cases, if she attempts to argue or refuses to marry the one
chosen for her, she is stoned to death by her own family. Physical abuse is condoned and supported in the Hindu faith. To attempt to run away from ones
family situation, for example, is to be caught, buried up to ones neck, then stoned to death(Parrish 2003). This has not always been
the case in India, however. In fact, many ancient religions, which pre-date Hinduism and even Christianity, place women as the dominant deity. In India, where Hinduism seems to have had
its birth, women were initially held as equals to the men. In fact, the only words which existed for the terms "power" and "strength" were feminine(A Tribute to Hinduism, 2003).
