wealth, rather than sports, ever since 1936. That year, the Summer Olympics took place in Berlin, Germany, which lay under the growing shadow of Nazi Germany. That summer, however, there
was no shadow - the Berlin Olympics were a glittering and bright extravaganza, put on to demonstrate to one and all the superiority of the so-called "Aryan Race" while showing
the rest of the world that Nazi Germany was a place in which the trains always ran on time, the streets were always clean and the citizens happy.
The Olympic Games, both the Winter Olympics that gook place at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria in 1932 (which featured the release of some 20,000 doves
of peace, according to writer William Shirer in his book, The Nightmare Years) and even more important, the Summer Games that took place in Berlin later that year, were what
Shirer called "a dazzling success for Adolf Hitler" (Shirer, 1985, p. 231). Hitler spared no expense or expansion when it came to these games; they were to be a propaganda
statement that Social Fascism and Nazism actually worked. At the time, the Games did the job: Shirer noted that "the athletes from around the world were impressed; the spectators, especially
from America, were impressed" (Shirer, 1985, p. 231). The Olympic Games, Shirer noted, were not only wonderfully organized, they were presented by a country that had managed to hide any
