in this particular industry -- oil field workers in the past tended to suffer from missing fingers and other types of injuries (Allen, 1994).
The oil industry of today however is different from the industry of almost a century ago. First of all, refinery and plant environments have been improved
so that fewer accidents occur either on oil rigs or in manufacturing plants (Allen, 1994). Second, the overall structure of the oil in energy industry is changing -- better
jobs and more responsibility are being rewarded to people who are proving that they deserve such responsibility (Allen, 1994). Back in the
mid-1990s, author Wayne Allen, himself and oil industry veteran, predicted that by the year 2000, the oil industry would be a more rewarding place to work (Allen, 1994). Despite
the volatility shown by the energy market, Allens prediction was that companies would have in place various incentive compensation programs to allow more workers to share in the financial success
of the Company (Allen, 1994). Allen also believed that accountability systems would be strengthened in many companies (Allen, 1994). Allen, of
course, could not have predicted how the Enron collapse would impact the industry -- nor could he predicted all of the megamergers of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
