dragged a derrick to their barge, then towed it to the site. Now, however, there are basically four types of rigs used offshore: submersibles, jackups, drillship, and semi-submersible. SUBMERSIBLES: This
type of rig is not used very often. This is because they are designed to sit on completely on the seabed and pump oil. They are often floated to shallow
water locations, then lowered to the bottom(Types of Rigs, 2004). This type of rig is more costly than the others. One of the reasons, one has to think, is
because this particular rig would be subject to the full force of the oceans tides, whereas many of the other types rise above the oceans waves completely, or are only
semi-submersed. JACKUPS: This rig is not floated into position, but is towed by a barge. Once in location, they have giant legs
which are lowered to the seabed. Once these pylons are in place, then the entire rig is jacked up or elevated, in other words, above the surface of the ocean.
This frees the platform of the rig from being as subject to the wave action of the ocean. The only drawback is that it is only stable up to a
depth of 160 meters(Freudenrich 2004). DRILLSHIP:
For all practical purposes, this type of rig looks almost like an ordinary seagoing vessel. The only major difference, of course, is that it is outfitted with a large derrick
on top and there is an actual hole in the hull where the drill goes. Once a ship reaches its intended destination special computer aided propellers keep the ship stabilized
