banker. Because Office Depot a retail Company dealing with products that are not necessarily dangerous or life-threatening, there are no regulations on
a national basis controlling the products that this company sells. Furthermore, when it comes to entry barriers, Office Depot and its competition has fairly low barriers at least from
a regulation perspective. The only regulatory bodies that Office Depot needs to take into account when entering a new market are state and city regulations as it pertains to proper
building codes and zoning locations. This is not mean however, that Office Depot has never run into problems or challenges from governmental
bodies in terms of specific regulations. In 1996, and went Office Depot announced a $3.4 billion agreement to be acquired by rival Company Staples, the U.S. government blocked that
acquisition in 1997 and on the grounds of antitrust difficulties (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003). As a result, the agreement dissolved, with both stores remaining rivals (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003).
The government had reason to be concerned, the acquisition would have meant that the new company wouldve had more than 1100 stores across
the United States -- which would have made competition extremely difficult in the industry (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003). In terms of future,
