the sixty something, traveling salesman, hero from Millers play, wants this to the exclusion of reality. And reality is exactly what Lennie and George discover in its harsh frankness,
in Steinbecks novel, Of Mice and Men. These two works of literature both make statements about friendship which can be said to serve as one of the unifying factors in
both stories. In John Steinbecks novel, Of Mice and Men, the tale shows the relationship between to men who are friends. In fact, it can be said that they have
been together so long that they need one another in order to be whole people. The novel takes place during the Great Depression and it finds the two friends, Lennie
and George looking for work at a ranch in California. They have just had to leave their last place of employment because Lennie, who is slightly mentally slow, was wrongly
accused of rape. As the story unfolds, the friendship is tested many times. Each time, even when frustrated, George comes to Lennies
rescue. All they have ever wanted was a piece of land to farm and call their own; where Lennie can be as big and dumb and strong as he wants
to be. Fate has other things in store for Lennie and in the end, it can be said that their friendship is tested one last time.
Accused of murder, at the end of the book, Lennie runs away to hide and wait for George to come and meet him. George finds
