Many non-verbal elements add to the rich texture of a play and it can be said that the set design can hinder or help the characters in their portrayal of
various themes. The action begins within the city limits of Thebes. Since a majority of the action takes place while on
a journey a moveable set, one that is easy to rearrange in quick fashion is dictated. What is proposed, then, is the use of three level platforms, each capable of
being raised or lowered and secured in place. This would allow for three varied levels in addition to the forestage area. These areas could depict bedrooms, insides of ships, even
Mt. Olympus. It is obvious in the first scene that most of the scenery should be glaring and hot, dusty and
washed out in appearance. Thebes is suffering from a plague that has left the land and the women barren. The King, Oedipus, has sent his brother in law to
seek guidance from an oracle. When he returns he tells the King that the murderer of Laius (the previous King) must be brought to justice. Oedipus swears he will go
on this quest to find the killer and cure his land and his people from this plague. The chorus plays a
