struggling against all odds and in the end succumbing to his own code of conduct after managing to bring some good to others. Throughout the entire play, however, it becomes
evident that Oedipus is trapped, not only by his code of conduct, but by the will of the gods, against which he has no control. The symbolism inherent with Oedipus
is that he is known to be slightly crippled because his heels were pinned when he was cast onto the hills. This is generally considered to be the mark of
a slave, and ironically enough, he is enslaved by the prophesy: "People of Thebes, my countrymen, look on Oedipus. He solved the famous riddle with his brilliance, he rose to
power, a man beyond all power. Who could behold his greatness without envy? Now what a black sea of terror has overwhelmed him. Now as we keep our watch and
wait the final day, count no man happy till he dies, free of pain at last" (Oedipus, li 1678-1684). Thus, one can
immediately see that Oedipus has had no say in his own fate since the time of his birth. Everything has been foreordained all the way down to his crippled feet.
Each revelation from the Oracle only confirms what Oedipus is beginning to understand: he has been at the mercy of the gods whims from the beginning.
Oedipuss brother in law has gotten wind of what the prophet has said and begins searching for the truth. Oedipus hears of it and accuses Creon
