of the human psyche. Thought to be a part of every persons growth and development, albeit on a purely subconscious basis, the Oedipal complex can be said to be as
much a part of the human collective as is the play from which it is named. But what is the complex exactly, and why did it take its name from
a play written thousands of years ago? Oedipus Rex, begins within the city limits of Thebes. Thebes is suffering from a plague
that has left the land and the women barren. The King, Oedipus, has sent his brother in law to seek guidance from an oracle. When he returns he tells
the King that the murderer of Laius(the previous King) must be brought to justice. Oedipus swears he will go on this quest to find the killer and cure his land
and his people from this plague. Oedipus sends for a blind prophet who seemingly knows where the killer is. When he
is brought to the King, though, he is reluctant to answer the Kings questions. Oedipus threatens the prophet with death unless he will tell Oedipus who the killer is. Finally the
prophet points an accusing finger at Oedipus. In a rage, Oedipus accuses the prophet of being paid by someone to say such things, because if they are true, then Oedipus
has killed his own father and married his mother. Oedipuss brother in law has gotten wind of what the prophet has said and begins searching for the truth. Oedipus hears
of it and accuses Creon of putting the prophet up to it. The chorus tries to separate the two, but are not able. However, just before a serious blow comes,
