rather, heroine, is this tale. She battles against political forces that would usurp her husbands throne, finds herself standing firm against those who would take her home and her lands
and murder her son. This woman was Odysseuss wife, Penelope. In the beginning of the tale, Odysseus has found himself imprisoned on the island of the Sirens, while back in
the palace, Penelope is besieged by suitors who are convinced that Odysseus is dead. They do not seek her hand in marriage so much as they desire all of the
kingdoms riches and power for themselves. The problem of Odysseuss only son, who is the natural successor to the throne, leads them to only one conclusion: Telemachus must die. It
is said that when two people are truly in love that there is a type of psychic bonding that occurs. One knows when the other is upset, even though they
are not close in proximity. This may have been Penelopes case in that she refused to believe in her husbands death, even though many assured her that it was so.
Though she seems outwardly to acknowledge their words, her heart and spirit will not. Demanding that she be allowed to prepare a burial shroud for the likely event of her
fathers death, she sets to the task of making a funeral shroud. Every day she spends hours working on it, then when night comes, she pulls the threads lose again.
Thus, she is never finished. Of course, there is another side to this story and another perspective that one could take. Women during this era were not allowed to own
property or their own money. Any assets she had when she wed were immediately turned over to her husband. But, in Odysseuss absence, she has been the one to rule
