His themes of timelessness, of the immortality of art, still serve to make pointed statements about the human condition. ODE TO A GRECIAN URN "THOU still unravishd bride of quietness, Thou foster-child of silence and slow time, Sylvan historian, who canst thus express"(Keats). In this, the opening lines, of Keats poem, Ode to a Grecian Urn, Keats is speaking about the timelessness of art(Analysis of Ode). Art, rendered to its simplest definition, is a frozen moment of time. Forever will the scenes on the Grecian Urn be captured and portrayed, outliving its artist, continuing to inspire and educate for countless generations. The situations and people depicted on the sides of the Urn are more precious than mortal melodies because they are not affected by the passing of time(Blackstone 25, see also Mulrooney). In this respect, then, the first two stanzas speak about joy and happiness in the timeless nature of art. The womans beauty will never fade, the men will always enjoy the chasing of the women, the melodies will always remain in the imagination of the viewer. The next stanzas, however, bring the reader and the viewer, a more sobering message. In comparison to the characters depicted on the Urn, mankinds capabilities for love and devotion are limited(John Keats: Ode). On the Urn there will never be quarrels, the blooms will never fade, and wrong notes will never be played. Timelessness is shown to be that which can be created by mankind, but never experienced.
