bring in elements of righteous religion, all but criticizing the religious people of her day, while also presenting us with somewhat righteous people who remain in the background. She spoke
of sin and redemption, truth and enlightenment in ways that were quite unique. One story that presents us with many of her themes regarding religion is "Good Country People." The
following paper examines the presence of Mrs. Freeman in the beginning and the end of this particular story. The paper argues that this subtle use of character is intended to
further emphasize the journey of Joy/Hulga Good Country People In the beginning we see Mrs. Freeman as a woman who seems to be rigid, going forward or backward, a
woman of perhaps no hope and a great deal of criticism. She is perhaps a woman who feels she knows what is best, and a woman who perhaps represents the
type of character Joy/Hulga does not wish to be, yet she is the character that Joy/Hulga is, or will become. While everyone who surrounds Joy/Hulga seem to be less than
righteous, assuming they have a market on virtue and integrity and righteous values, it is the character of Joy/Hulga who seems to have the potential for so much more. As
a graduated student of philosophy she has the knowledge and the wisdom to rise above the ridiculous and find truth. But, it is her anger, her emotions, and her depression
perhaps, which keep her stuck and keep her in a position of sin. She has actively chosen not to use her knowledge for her own enlightenment. In light of
