illness and he is embarrassed at his mothers behavior prior to the stroke she experiences. The viewpoint of the tale is first person, but the reader is fooled at first
when the focus is on the protagonist/narrators own mother (Lukeman 17). Also, from the outset, in addition to the surprise element is a sense of tone that is rather dismal
and equated with human suffering. There is a sadness that permeates this work as well as an aura of regret. While that is the gist of the story-a woman succumbs
to her health problem in public-- there is also race and racism involved. In fact, to make the point that this is an issue, OConnor notes: " When he got
on a bus by himself, he made it a point to sit down beside a Negro" (8). In other words, the author is demonstrating Julians own mindset separate and apart
from his parent. Julians mother takes center stage as a black woman enters the bus wearing the same hat as she. While race certainly enters the picture, it is Julian
who is on the road to self-discovery. In part, it is a journey related to race and the fact that he is white. Race is something everyone must deal with
in a multiracial society. No matter what ones color or religion or ethnicity, they at some point realize that they are different from some of the people in the rest
of the world. Here, it seems that race is an important thematic element of the story. The story is replete with references about Julians mothers weight and there is a
