how many view the story, but what was OConnors intent, or at least what is a different interpretation? A student writing on this work should know that in a speech
delivered by OConnor herself in 1963, it is claimed that the story does not render the grandmother as evil (OConnor On Her Own 107). She suggests that instead, people cannot
see her as such because they can identify with the grandmother as most people do have older women in their lives--grandmothers or aunts--which with they can identify. That said, the
importance of denoting the grandmother or the Misfit as evil is rather relevant in how people look at life in general and live their own lives. There is in

notorious Misfit. Both the grandmother and the Misfit are concerned with the question of how the should be lived. It is something that is not discussed right away, but through
discussion, one can see that this is true. Some say that the grandmother represents a sort of goodness and the Misfit evil, even though OConnor holds the reverse. Again,
the supposition that OConnor sees things that way is simply not true as she stated herself. Yet, it pays to look at how each of the characters viewed the world.
