a hint of what he was capable of on a literary level, but then would seem to switch gears and write for the paying audience. Of course, no one could
fault him for this. However, many have wondered what O. Henry might have written had he not be forced by the necessity to feed his family. To that end, then,
there is a great deal of varying opinions on the works of O. Henry and his writing style. For the most part,
most of O. Henrys short stories follow the same formatting. Ejexenbaum, in his criticism of O. Henry, states that there are several basic parts to the O. Henry structure: Opening,
initiation of intrigue, love, mystery and denouement(Ejxenbaum 20). Of these characteristics, this critic believes that the surprise endings are what seemed to make O. Henry stories stand out from the
rest of the short story writers of his day. Despite all indications to the contrary, many of the short stories manage to end happily ever after. However, he is quick
to point out that O. Henry does not play foul with the reader. The astute reader can see where O. Henry lays the foundation for such a happy ending, but
does so in a most subtle way. It is as if O. Henry plays on the expectation of a terrible demise, then, at the last moment, as a sort of
parody, pulls the rug out from under the unwary reader, suggests Ejxenbaum. Nothing, then, is wasted in an O. Henry story, not even the names and the tiniest of details.
