Menopause is associated with a number of side effects that can make life anything from awkward to miserable for the menopausal woman. Numerous authors have explored the intricacies of menopausal side effects. Nutrition has been proven to reduce the impacts of some of these side effects. Among the side effects that can be affected by nutrition is the age of onset of menopause (Thomas, Renaud, Benefice, De Meeus, and Guegan 271). Other impacts of nutrition are found on the more debilitating or inconveniencing aspects of menopausal symptoms. The weight gain that is associated with menopause, for example, can be minimized (at least in animals) with the consumption of chlorella (a fresh water algae that is considered a super food because of its nutritive value) (Shoenhals 47). Lyndaker and Hulton identify a four to six year period preceding menopause where a woman can expect irregular menstrual cycles. The quantify of blood discharged during this period can vary as well (Lyndaker and Hulton). As estrogen levels decline, however, and even more concerning side effect of menopause emerges, that side effect is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects a womans bone density. Peak bone density in an individual is most often achieved by age thirty. Once peak density is achieved, however, bone density typically begins to decline. This decline accelerates in women after menopause. Calcium and Vitamin D supplementation can be an important factor in preventing the emergence of diseases like osteoporosis.
