swallowing, but it can also occur due to altered "gonadal, adrenal and thyroid function" (Ungvarski, 1996, p. 26). Nurses play a crucial role in combating HIV wasting through educational interventions with HIV asymptomatic patients, as well as acting as a resource for information on successful interventions that can be employed when HIV wasting strikes (Ungvarski, 1996). In advising nurses on how to aid HIV patients with nutritional guidance, Ungvarski (1996) recommends, first of all, impressing upon the patient the importance of good nutritional habits: which includes eating three full meals per day and three snacks (Ungvarski, 1996). As HIV patient will go through periods where eating is difficulty, they should be advised to eat large meals while they are feeling well, so they can build up their stores of fat and muscle mass in order to decrease the effects of wasting during the times when they eat less (Ungvarski, 1996). It is also advised that nurses keep in the mind the patients personal preferences when designing a diet, as food that is totally new to the patient or a standardized diet can certainly decrease the likelihood of patient adherence to this regimen (Ungvarski, 1996). It is also advisable for HIV patients to take an "OTC vitamin and mineral supplement" every day (Ungvarski, 1996). Empirical evidence shows that there is a "synergistic and interactive relationship between nutrition and infection" (Webb and Villamor, 2007, p. 181). In a U.S. study, the effect of selenium supplementation was evaluated using a cohort of 450 HIV-positive men and women in a double blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial. The findings of this study suggest that selenium supplements, specifically a yeast supplement of 200 pg/day, is capable of suppressing HIV viral load and increasing cell count (Selenium can, 2007). Additionally, Webb and Villamor (2007) ...
