Weddle, Himburg and Collins (2002) conducted a historical qualitative study of registered dieticians, seeking to discover the approaches that dietetics professionals have used in establishing the individual Professional Development Portfolio
(PDP), "the new credentialing system for dietetics professionals" (p. 1439). The researchers facilitated 16 focus group discussions in which 132 volunteers participated. Their purpose was to discover whether
these 132 registered dieticians used the "critical components" of PDP recertification. The researchers define "critical components" as reflection, self-assessment and goal setting (Weddle, Himburg and Collins, 2002.
Weddle, Himburg and Collins (2002) recorded the focus groups discussions and then transcribed 643 of quoted material. They established a keyword list and searched
transcript text for each to find that relatively few dietetics professionals use all of the PDP critical components. They conclude that individuals can
learn the goal-setting skills they need, and offer three recommendations for individual improvement. They are allowing sufficient time for personal reflection; develop personal mission statements; and "use effectiveness criteria
to critique their goals" (Weddle, Himburg and Collins, 2002; p. 1439). Personally, this approach appears to be a valid one for use in setting any type of goal. Consumers
