ineffective in fighting disease or sickness caused by microbial organisms. The thesis can be presented that:
Inadequate nutrition and the contraction of food borne diseases affect not only the propensity to contract AIDS but also reduces the bodys ability to fight off the disease
This thesis, however, finds little support in terms of actual research demonstrating increased longevity as
a result of improved nutrition. Never-the-less, the benefits reaped in terms of quality of life can be assumed to relate to increased survival.
The HIV virus currently infects some forty million people (Moore, 2004). Although numerous treatments are in the experimental stages and several drugs have been used successfully to temporarily
prolong the lives of persons infected with AIDS, a cure has yet to be discovered. Without treatment the picture is grim at best, death usually occurs within a few
months to a few years after the virus attack on the human system. Maintaining proper nutrition and guarding against the introduction of food-borne diseases that would further complicate the
situation is a critical step in fighting AIDS (Hoffman et. al., 2005). The question of how to insure an optimal nutritional regime for
AIDS patients has plagued medical professionals and nutritionists alike practically since the discovery of the disease. Patient attitudes interplay with socioeconomic factors to complicate the problem considerably. Limited
