arise in respect to autonomy in nursing as well as quality, but in the end, VA hospitals-inclusive of the Asheville facility-come out with surprisingly high marks. It is not as
if Asheville is perfect, and in fact, there is some sense that things have gone awry at the facility, but of late, things seem to have improved. A bit of
background in respect to the VA hospitals in general is appropriate for this analysis. It should be noted that through the early part of the 1990s, VA hospitals provided substandard
care, something that angered Congress (Waller, 2006). Things have improved a great deal since that time (Waller, 2006). In fact, the VA now oversees the most significant integrated health care
system in the nation (Waller, 2006). Since 2000, VA facilities have been rated higher than regular facilities when it comes to customer satisfaction (Waller, 2006). Not only is customer satisfaction
rated higher than it is on a general scale, the death rate is somewhat lower as well, at least for males over the age of 65 (Waller, 2006). The VA
also would win the Innovations in American Government Award in respect to the VAs computerization in terms of patient records (Waller, 2006). That was an award to come from Harvard
