is aiding an alcoholic. First we need to consider the patient. The problematic use of alcohol was first defined in 1960 when Jellinek split the abuse of alcohol into two
different classifications , "alcohol addicts" and "habitual symptomatic excessive drinkers (Jellinek quoted in Dawson, 2000). Jellineks argument was that it was only the addicts which had a disease whereas
the others had a problem, but it was with coping with their lives from which alcohol abuse gave temporary relief (Dawson, 2000). In this case we have a patent that
is classified by DSM IV (Grant, 1998). The patient is one that does recognise there is a problem, but des not see it as serous, unlike 51% of the
men who seek treatment having a history of arrest, this is one of the 49% that seeks treatment without an arrest (Dawson, 2000). When we look at the DSM IV
criteria the our patient, who we will call Tom, was classified as positive in the following diagnostic criteria. He is continuing alcohol abuse despite interpersonal problems or social caused brought
about by drinking (Dawson, 2000). Repeated drinking of alcohol on dangerous situations (Dawson, 2000). The repeated neglect of obligations or personal duties due to the use of alcohol (Dawson, 2000).
It is also worth noting that the International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA) recognises alcoholism as a primary disease (IntNSA, 1975). Our patient
