to be nurtured. While it is the case that a lot of what can be learned about nursing vulnerable populations cannot be found in textbooks, and can only be gleaned
from personal experience, relaying experiences is also helpful for new nurses who may have little or no practical work experience. First, it pays to define just what is meant
by a vulnerable population. Bill Clinton (2001) lists the elderly, inclusive of nursing home residents, as a vulnerable population. Linda Hodges (2001), who is the Dean at the College of
Nursing concurs and states in respect to the elderly, that it is "one of societys most vulnerable populations" (p.PG). Why is it the case that the elderly are so vulnerable?
In some way, American society values youth. It does not really care about extending the life of an elderly person. That is not cost effective. While that appears to
be a rather callous statement, it is true that families, insurance companies and physicians do make decisions sometimes based upon age. Also, the elderly are vulnerable for other reasons as
well. They are not as physically strong as they were in their youth. Most importantly, assuming they are not being physically abused, their mental capacity often fades due to dementia,
or Alzheimers, or a host of other maladies that create this state where there is disorientation and less decision making capability. It is said that as people grow old,
they turn back into babies. They lose their teeth , their hair, their ability to control their bladders. In some way, they regress almost to the state in which they
were born and then inevitably return to that space that is so mysterious. Yet, as people age, they become vulnerable and another population that is equally vulnerable are children. Of
