Parse and Jean Watson. Parse and Watson are two of the more notable modern-day nursing theorists. Both view nursing primarily from the perspective of the client and recognize that the environment in which interaction with the client is critical in determining outcome. That view comprises their metaparadigm of nursing and, in fact, frames the nursing discipline within their perspective. While there are many similarities between the theories of Watson and Parse, there are also subtle differences. These will be delineated by first exploring the theories themselves and then linking other notable nursing theories to them. Watson first developed her theories in the 1980s and they offered tremendous insight into the importance of human to human interaction in the field (Sitzman, 2002). Watsons (2003) contends that nursing should entail "a sense of reverence and sacredness with regard to life and all living things. It incorporates both art and science, as they are also being redefined, acknowledging a convergence between art, science, and spirituality" (Watson, 2003). In the past such theories were sometimes perceived as too esoteric for the mainstream medical community who often preferred pure science over such an approach. These past perceptions, however, should not sway the student from a determined investigation into the importance of the holistic approach in nursing to patient outcome. Watson (2003) lists "provision for a supportive, protective, and/or corrective mental, physical, societal, and spiritual environment" among the ten carative factors that she considers critical in nursing today.
