My motivation for pursuing an undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of California at Los Angeles is to fulfill my dream of becoming a nurse and to use
my skills to help many in need. My choice of UCLA School of Nursing came after an assessment of a number of different programs and my need to enter
a program that has a multicultural focus. I was born the oldest of five children in Nigeria and have experienced conflicts since moving to this country, including social stigmatization
and struggles with cultural understanding. Though I realize that no educational setting is without conflict, the highly diversified nature of the student population at UCLA led me to select it
as my first choice school for my undergraduate nursing studies. As an immigrant in this country, I have gained valuable insight into the levels of health care and
the populations most in need of care. My volunteer experiences at a Los Angeles hospital have helped me recognize the need for a multicultural approach to nursing and to
health care in general. Ive also had experiences in Nigeria that have motivated me to become a nurse and to take effective, evidence-based nursing practices back to Nigeria.
Nigeria is a country that has gone through significant economic struggles that has impacted the ability to sustain a healthy population. The country lacks infrastructure necessary to maintain
basic services like electricity, water supply, transportation, and medical care. Many of the people in the country experience marginal health care services at best. Even established clinics lack
