This perspective states that even though we are partial to those with whom we have frequent or close contact, we can still have compassion for those with whom we are not close (Butts & Rich, 2005). Communities are established in many different venues, including the workplace. Established communities will always act for the common good of the community (Butts & Rich, 2005). In Saras scenario, her supervisor cuts her off at every turn. It seems the new director has adopted a dictatorial leadership style wherein she wants her directives followed in the manner she prescribes. She is putting her individual biases above the good of the community, which, in this case is the team of nurses. One recommendation for Sara is to try to engage the new director in a discussion about the importance of the community. The good of the community will not be served by firing the two nurses who have been the most vocal about the new directors reorganization. If it is possible to engage this individual in such a discussion, Sara would have the opportunity to explain that firing these two nurses will upset the team and, in turn, that will have a negative effect on patient care. Sara will most likely need to use conflict management strategies. These include using active listening and "I" messages. If the new director responds, Sara would then turn the discussion around to problem solving.
